At the end of Grade 9, every learner locks in the seven subjects they'll carry through Grades 10, 11 and 12 to matric. It's one of the most consequential decisions a South African family makes at school, because some university and college doors are decided — in practice — by choices made at 14 or 15. The good news: you don't need to know the career. You need to understand what's being chosen, which choices are hard to reverse, and how to keep the widest sensible range of doors open. Here's the whole picture.
What every learner takes: the seven subjects
From Grade 10 — the start of the FET phase — every learner takes seven subjects. Four are compulsory, the same for everyone:

The other three are electives, chosen from the list the school offers. That's the real decision: one maths fork plus three electives, carried for three years.
A learner takes one maths subject — Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy (or, at technical schools, Technical Mathematics). They are alternatives, not additions.
The elective subjects that exist
Electives are chosen from the DBE's approved list — around 25 subjects nationally, though every school offers only the subset its timetable and staff allow. They group loosely into directions:

Two things families often miss:
- Your school offers a subset, in fixed timetable columns. The ideal trio may not be co-selectable — two wanted subjects can sit in the same column and force an either/or. Always check the school's actual combinations before settling on a plan.
- IT and CAT are different subjects. IT is programming and computer science; CAT is practical office and software skills. They're not interchangeable for university purposes.
The maths fork: the decision with the longest shadow
This one choice constrains more futures than the other three electives combined.
Mathematics keeps the widest range open. It is a hard requirement — and Mathematical Literacy is explicitly not accepted — for engineering, the physical and natural sciences, medicine and most health sciences, actuarial science, and the mainstream commerce and chartered-accountancy route. For these, most universities also want a solid mark (often 50–60%+), not a bare pass.
Mathematical Literacy is a genuinely useful subject about real-world, applied numeracy — budgets, measurement, data, interest. It is not a lesser version of Maths; it's a different subject. Many programmes do accept it — humanities, education, law, social work, many nursing and some commerce paths — but typically at a higher required mark than they'd ask in Mathematics (for example, a programme might accept Maths at 50% or Maths Literacy at 60–70%).
The honest framing: Maths Literacy is an excellent subject to choose, and a costly one to default into. If a learner is scraping 40% in Grade 9 maths, the real question is whether targeted help can lift the foundation before the fork — a term of focused work on the actual gaps can change which option is realistic. Technical Mathematics exists too, mainly at technical schools — it swaps some abstract theory for applied, trade-relevant maths and suits artisan, technical and many TVET-college paths. One warning worth stating plainly: despite the name, it is often not accepted in place of pure Mathematics for university engineering and science. If a degree is on the horizon, verify the target institution's rules before choosing it.
Think in directions, not careers
Most Grade 9s don't have a career plan, and don't need one. What subjects really control is which categories of study stay open. A few anchors from how universities actually admit:
- The widest-open academic set is Mathematics + Physical Sciences + Life Sciences — it preserves nearly all BSc, engineering and health-science options. It's also the heaviest workload, which is the real trade-off.
- Faculties require specific subjects, not prestige. A Wits engineering applicant needs English, Mathematics and Physical Sciences; commerce needs English and Mathematics; a BSc needs Mathematics. Two learners with the same total can qualify for different degrees because of which subjects they took.
- "Designated subjects" set the floor, not the ceiling. Degree admission needs a Bachelor's pass, which requires four subjects from an 18-subject designated list. But almost every academic elective — even Mathematical Literacy — is on that list, so it rarely blocks anyone. The real gatekeepers are the specific subject-and-mark requirements each degree adds on top, plus your APS score.
The practical takeaway: don't chase "impressive" subjects. Strong marks in a keeps-doors-open set beat weak marks in a prestigious one, because admission runs on APS points and subject levels.
A practical process for the decision
- Start from three or four plausible directions — not careers, directions ("something health-related", "business-ish", "technical", "people/creative"). Our after-matric guide maps what each direction needs.
- Look up two real programmes per direction on university websites and note their subject requirements. Twenty minutes of reading prevents the classic Grade 11 discovery that a dream programme needed Physical Sciences.
- Check the school's actual combinations. Electives are chosen from fixed timetable columns — confirm the trio you want is co-selectable.
- Weigh the marks honestly. Grade 9 performance is a real signal of Grade 12 performance. Keep Maths on the table if it's reachable with support, but don't build a plan on marks that aren't there.
- Decide with the learner, not for them. They're carrying these subjects for three years; buy-in is worth marks.
Check the latest: programme entry requirements change and differ per university — verify against each institution's current admission pages for the year your child will apply, not older siblings' memories or school folklore.
If the choice later feels wrong
Subject choices aren't quite irreversible — but the window narrows fast, so treat the Grade 9 decision as close to final. National rules allow:

Two cautions: individual schools often set earlier deadlines than the national ones, and every change means catching up terms of missed work. The Maths → Maths Literacy switch is usually allowed within these windows; going the other way — Maths Literacy → Mathematics — is far harder and often not practical.
After the window closes, the better play is usually to strengthen the hand you hold: marks move doors more than late swaps do, and second routes exist after matric for almost every destination. For lifting a struggling subject, start with the study techniques that actually work.
